Four Alerting Best Practices

Alert Escalation:

Through policies, IT can escalate alerts based on the criticality of network components—for example, alerts can automatically generate trouble tickets that tell pre-designated administrators of issues they are responsible for.

Alert Acknowledgement:

WhatsUp Gold manages alerts so the correct person is notified. For instance, if the first responder acknowledges the alert, WhatsUp Gold considers the problem as handled and won’t send further alerts unless prompted by the notification policy.

Dependency-Aware Alerting:

Manually or automatically apply dependency rules to Layer 2 and Layer 3 network devices. Alerting only on the relevant device, not downstream or dependent devices that are otherwise operable, avoids alert storms.

Alert Thresholds:

With WhatsUp Gold, actions are triggered by thresholds. Exceeding a threshold by a sliver, for instance, is a less concerning action or alert than exceeding that threshold by a wide margin.

Actionable Alerts

WhatsUp Gold allows for actionable alerts. What if a server is down and needs a restart? This event can trigger an actionable process that automatically restarts the server.

Actions based on alerts can perform device tasks when the device's state changes. These actions can fix the problem or integrate with external applications, such as a help desk ticketing system, and add the issue to the support queue.

Setting Alert Baselines

Alert set-up is critical and should be done right. If not, IT isn’t alerted to real problems or is over-alerted, swamped with notifications about every little thing—driving admins mad.

Alerts tell IT when something is amiss. To properly set up many alert types, IT needs to define what is normal, often setting that as a threshold. Network monitoring can determine normal operations by continuously observing IT infrastructure activity.

With these baselines, network staffers calibrate alerts so they are only activated by meaningful deviations from normal.

Active Vs Performance Monitors

Active Monitors send alerts when devices change state. In contrast, Performance Monitors issue alerts when pre-set thresholds are exceeded. In either case, anything WhatsUp Gold Free Edition monitors can be the basis of an alert.

Who Gets What Alerts?

In a one-person network operation, alerts go to that one individual. Larger shops have staff responsible for network and application performance and availability. Fortunately, WhatsUp Gold alerts can be sent only to the appropriate person. This can be determined by severity or the type of alert – for instance, sending it to the person responsible for that aspect of the network or applications with an issue.

What do you like best about Progress WhatsUp Gold?

What's Up Gold is a fantastic tool, personally I love the automatic discovery of the network that allows me to have a topology almost instantly, on the other hand also the little consumption of resources. Personally, I am a fan of the NTA module and of Log Management and the Config Management module, it really is a very complete management. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
